Dental hygiene

Teaching your children the importance of proper dental hygiene from a young age can set them on a lifelong journey to a beautiful and healthy smile. Good oral hygiene and a balanced diet help prevent future dental problems like caries and gum diseases.

To help establish good oral hygiene habits, you need a great dental routine that is also fun! Try these simple techniques to get your child brushing and flossing their teeth.

Lead by Example

Young kids mimic everything they see their parents do, and that includes brushing your teeth. Let them watch you brush and floss your teeth and make it look like you’re having a lot of fun while doing it, so they will want to do it too.

Verbalize your actions while you brush, with comments on how you use little circles when brushing and when to spit and rinse. This commentary can help you teach your children the correct brushing techniques.

Let Them Pick Their Toothbrush

There are so many cute character children’s toothbrushes on the market that your child is sure to find their favorite. This can make them more invested in tooth-brushing. When it comes time to brush their teeth, sing a catchy toothbrush song to ensure they are brushing for the required two minutes.

Also, choose children’s toothpaste that contains fluoride to protect their pearly whites from cavities.

Get Creative With Dental Games

Encourage them to brush their stuffed toys’ teeth and tell their toy why it is important to brush and floss. Colgate has several dental game ideas that teach kids the importance of caring for their teeth and gums.

Read Them Books About Teeth and Visiting the Dentist

Prepare them for an upcoming dental visit by reading them a dental story by some of their favorite authors, such as The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan and Jan Berenstain and The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss.

Use Duplo Blocks to Teach Them How to Floss

Stick play-doh around the blocks and the base (the teeth) and ask your child to remove it using floss. Stress how important it is to remove all the play-doh from between the teeth and along the gumline (base).

Use Egg Cartons to Demonstrate Which Foods Are Healthy

Cut a tooth from a white styrofoam egg carton. Give your child the tooth and ask them to choose snacks from a list of tooth-friendly and unhealthy options.

If they select healthy food, use a dry erase marker to color a circle on their tooth, but if they choose unhealthy food, use a permanent black marker. Give your child a toothbrush and ask them to brush away their food circles and explain that the unhealthy foods are hard to brush away and harm their teeth.
