Post-Op Root Canal Treatment Instructions

If you’ve recently had a root canal procedure, there are a few things you’ll need to know to ensure a quick and easy recovery! Be certain to follow these guidelines throughout your healing process to keep your surgical site in great condition.

Immediately After Your Procedure

During your root canal procedure, your dentist will use an anesthetic to numb the surgical site. The effects of this may take several hours to wear off, so it is strongly advised that you do not chew foods or drink hot beverages until sensation has been restored.

Temporary Fillings

Once your root canal has been completed, your dentist will place a temporary filling or crown over the tooth while it heals. These medicated fillings can wear slightly between fillings or even become loose. This is normal, but if the entire restoration falls out, you should contact the dentist to set up a new appointment for replacement. To maintain your temporary filling for as long as possible, be sure to avoid biting or chewing directly on the tooth.

Medication and Pain Management

While a root canal procedure will alleviate much of the pain you may have experienced due to the infection, you may still have some slight discomfort during the recovery process. Cleaning the root canals can cause some swelling and inflammation, making your surgical site feel a bit tender. Therefore, you should be certain to follow your dentists’ instructions regarding pain medication carefully. You will likely only need ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain medication to manage post-operative pain. If you experience severe pain or swelling, be sure to discuss the issue with your dentist. Your dentist may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the chance of infection. In this instance, be certain to follow the instructions carefully and take them as directed.

Diet

To ensure that your tooth heals properly, it is important to be careful about the foods you eat during the recovery process. Sticky or hard foods could remove or damage your temporary filling, so be certain to avoid them. You can also protect the tooth by chewing on the other side of your mouth during your recovery. Once you receive your permanent crown or filling, you’ll be able to resume eating your favorite foods again.

Oral Hygiene

It is imperative to be diligent about your dental hygiene routine after you’ve had a root canal procedure. You should continue to brush your teeth twice daily, floss every night, and use an antiseptic mouthwash to help maintain your oral health. This will help to ensure that your surgical site heals properly. After the tooth has healed, be sure to keep up your oral hygiene routine to protect your teeth from future problems!
